Wyvern crowns are a premium currency used for many things. There are currently 3 types of crowns:
Starter Crowns All new characters start with 100, and you gain 2 starter crowns for every quest point gained from completing a quest These crowns can be used to buy quest points, join guilds without completing specific quests, and adding modifications to items (no steal, no curse, etc.)
Personal Crowns These are different from starter crowns, as they can be exchanged for gold. These used to be gained as a gift from Rhialto (owner of the game) who now gives starter crowns.
Account Crowns Personal crowns, but usable by EVERY character on your account. These are the crowns you get from buying in-game with real world currency.
